Hon. Minister John Baird Condemns Attacks in Afghanistan on Day of Ashura

“Canada strongly condemns the attacks today in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif that killed or wounded numerous Shia worshipers on the Day of Ashura. There can be no justification for these cowardly acts of religious extremism, which targeted innocent men, women and children simply practising their faith in peace.

“Canada joins with the Government of Afghanistan in condemning these attacks in the strongest of terms, and we hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those killed in these attacks, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured. We stand with the people of Afghanistan at this difficult time.”
